The Character Counts! Pillars are Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness,
Fairness, Caring and Citizenship
To celebrate the Character Counts Pillar of Citizenship we are honoring CCE family members who are currently serving the United States in active duty military service. We have created a page here on our school website to highlight these special men and women. Click here to go to our MILITARY SALUTE. We invite you to include immediate family members or extended family members currently serving in any branch of the US Armed Forces.

Wierda's Weekly Words
November 25, 2008
Dear Parents and Friends of Cunningham Creek,
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I continue to give thanks for all of the dedicated staff members here, our involved and devoted parents, and our wonderful children. Along with the hugs and cards that I get daily from our students, I am so impressed by their creativity, critical thinking skills and eagerness to achieve and to make a difference in their world. Thank you so much for allowing me to lead Cunningham Creek and to be a small part of the lives of your children! I am truly honored.
As we give thanks, we give of ourselves in many ways. Our Canned Food Drive for the Salvation Army, spearheaded by our Student Council, was an outstanding success. We had thousands of cans donated to those in need and many of our classrooms competed heavily for the privilege of "outgiving each other." Thank you to Student Council sponsors Mr. Huber and Ms. Vidales, and all of our dedicated and passionate boys and girls who assisted in this successful display of compassion.
We are also fortune to partner once again with the St. Augustine Youth Services for the month of December. You can contribute toward making the holiday season merry for this group of boys by dropping off your loose change in the main office or with your classroom teacher, and by attending our annual “Light the Night Celebration” on Thursday, December 4th. This beautiful tradition will include a holiday sing-along, hot chocolate and luminaries on our outside deck, a free spaghetti dinner served by the Bartram Trail Rotary Club and holiday pictures taken of you and your family. This is one of our most popular CCE traditions, and we hope to have several of the boys from the boys’ home visiting with us that night! Please keep your eyes glued to next week’s Chatter as we give specific details on times for dinner, pictures, etc. Save the date for December 4th for a night of fun and CCE fellowship!
Our children continue to perform well and give of their hearts each day at CCE, and we continue to teach and train them through positive discipline, understanding and by embracing the Pillars of Character in creative ways. Mrs. Jarrell and I have taken some time to visit in every fifth grade classroom to explain the anti-bullying law that is in effect for all of our Florida children. There is a link to this important information on our website if you would like to spend some time reading and discussing this important information with your child. During our talks, our fifth graders were very articulate and expressed their concerns and questions regarding this policy and how it could possibly connect to them in elementary school and beyond. I was quite proud of their willingness to discuss a difficult but important subject. You should be proud of your children who are expressing themselves eloquently and with conviction.
As we head into the last three weeks of 2008, I am truly proud of the hard work of your children. They have been presented with high expectations in their classrooms, and our teachers are working hard to ensure that they are prepared to meet grade level benchmarks and are prepared for the world beyond these walls. Please take a moment to thank your teachers as we head into our Thanksgiving season. A word from you would mean so much! Our teachers wear so many hats and put so much of themselves into their jobs. They consistently astound me with their level of care and preparation.
Thanksgiving for me this year means some family time, some time away visiting my aging parents and a weekend of Pop Warner Cheerleading! It is never boring with children is it? I also look forward to reading and catching up on some planning! We have so much to look forward to in 2009!
I wish each of you a beautiful Thanksgiving together as a family with time for relaxation, reading, laughter, great food, rest and rejuvenation for the upcoming holiday season and rigorous school work ahead. As always, I am fortunate and thankful to be a part of the Cunningham Creek family. I am inspired by your children, amazed by your involvement as parents, awed by the teaching of our staff and the dedication of all involved at CCE. What a joy it is to be a part of this outstanding learning community! Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
With an attitude of gratitude,
Betsy Wierda, Literacy Leader
